You don’t need to be a policy expert to influence change—you just need your voice, your story, and a few powerful tools.

In this hands-on, caregiver-centered session, we’ll walk through how Colorado laws and rules are created—and how everyday voices like yours can help shape them. From understanding the difference between systems and culture, to learning how to contact lawmakers or submit public comment, this class is designed to demystify the legislative process and empower you to participate in ways that feel meaningful and sustainable.

We’ll explore key wins from the 2025 legislative session that impacted child welfare, and we’ll introduce a clear, trauma-informed framework for sharing your story without burning out. You’ll also get access to the BTS Story Sharing Tool, a resource to spotlight concerns, challenges, and areas needing change.

Finally, you’ll hear from a powerful panel of caregivers, advocates, and policy influencers who’ve been part of the legislative process—from submitting testimony to writing and passing bills. Learn what they wish they knew, what surprised them, and how you can take your next step.

Whether you’ve never spoken up before or you’re ready to do more, this training will leave you feeling more confident, connected, and equipped to make your voice heard.

Presented by First Witness, this training gives caregivers the tools to confidently talk with children about body safety. Participants will learn to spot grooming and manipulation, recognize signs of abuse, respond effectively to disclosures, and foster safe, open communication at home.

Conversations about body safety are an essential part of healthy child development—but they can feel intimidating for both caregivers and children. This training, presented by First Witness, equips caregivers with tools to confidently guide those conversations in age-appropriate, supportive ways. We will explore how to recognize grooming and victim manipulation, identify possible signs of child sexual abuse, and respond calmly and effectively if a child discloses. Caregivers will also gain strategies for creating safe, open communication at home and for supporting the children in their care as they learn about boundaries and online safety. While the focus is on educating foster and kinship providers, participants will also learn how to encourage non-offending caregivers to grow their communication skills and normalize conversations about body safety. By the end of the session, caregivers will feel more prepared to build trust, strengthen resilience, and help children know their voices and boundaries matter.

Prevention Education Coordinator / Family Advocate and Trainer

    First Witness

Gracie moved from Wisconsin to Duluth to attend the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where she quickly fell in love with the city. At UMD, she earned bachelor’s degrees in both Biochemistry and Criminology. During her undergraduate career, she served on the Sexual Misconduct Hearing Committee, tutored in math and chemistry courses, was a teaching assistant for the criminology department, and completed an internship at First Witness. Throughout her time at UMD, Gracie focused on coursework in Psychopathy and Crime, Understanding Violence, Criminal Forensic Psychology, and Sociology of Gender. After graduation, Gracie continued her work with First Witness as the Operations Assistant.

Before working at First Witness, Gracie worked at a local residential addiction treatment facility, where she gained a passion for advocating for marginalized individuals who had experienced severe trauma in their lives. She also worked at afterschool programs in the area for three years, and spent her summers outside at camp, teaching kids how to paddle, climb, bike, and hike. These positions, combined with her education, fostered her love for working with children and families and strengthened her knowledge of how trauma affects children, adolescents, and adults.

In her free time, Gracie enjoys paddling up the North Shore, trying new coffee shops, going on long hikes, and watching even longer movies.

This training introduces the PACE model—Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy—as a practical framework for strengthening attachment and connection with children who have experienced trauma, loss, or disrupted caregiving. Grounded in Attachment Theory and Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP), PACE offers caregivers concrete tools to create safety, reduce conflict, and nurture trust in everyday interactions. Participants will learn how small shifts in approach can support emotional regulation, repair relationships after hard moments, and foster long-term resilience. Caregivers will leave with practical strategies they can use right away to deepen healing connections and promote felt safety at home.

Attachment Theory provides a powerful lens for understanding the needs of children who have experienced trauma, loss, or disrupted relationships. Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP) takes these insights a step further by offering caregivers concrete ways to respond with safety, trust, and connection.

This training introduces the PACE model—Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy—as a practical framework to strengthen attachment and reduce conflict in daily caregiving. Participants will learn how these simple but profound approaches can transform everyday interactions, support emotional regulation, and foster resilience in children who struggle with trust.

    Caregivers will leave with:

    • A clear understanding of how attachment impacts behavior and relationships.

    • Practical examples of how to use PACE in real-life caregiving moments.

    • Strategies for repairing after conflict and creating felt safety at home.

Whether you’re new to attachment-focused caregiving or looking to deepen your skills, this session will equip you with tools to nurture stronger, healing connections with the children in your care.

    Amy Gall (Moderator)

    MC Intern

    Be The Source

Amy has had a heart for children in foster care since the age of 15, when she was recruited as a counselor for Camp Horizon of Georgia, a summer camp for children in care. What started as a week-long commitment turned into a passion that spanned more than twenty years. Amy also served as a foster care counselor in a residential treatment home and as a CASA. Her work as a School Psychologist and life coach for teenagers gave her a front row seat to the ups and downs of school life children encounter including the joys, the scrapes, the disappointments, and the victories.

Amy is currently earning her master’s degree in counseling at Adams State University and plans to practice from an attachment based lens, incorporating Internal Family Systems (IFS). Her goal is to walk alongside those she works with, supporting their healing while encouraging empowerment and agency. She is grateful to be at Be the Source as part of her graduate training, and considers it a privilege to contribute to such a vital mission.

Her entire extended family lives in the South, which makes her family a bit of a tumbleweed out here in Colorado. For the past 11 years she has lived in Colorado with her husband who has an affinity for endurance races and their tiny white dog, Gizmo, who unashamedly runs the household. Their two wonderful adult daughters, ages 21 and 24, have stretched her heart and mind in countless ways.

When she is not studying or working, Amy loves all things outdoors (except snakes!) and dreams of living in eternal summer weather one day. She finds joy in gardens of every kind, loves belly laughing with friends, and treasures time with animals. She also speaks a little French and is fairly fluent in sarcasm.

Widening the Window is a session designed to provide basic information about the Window of Tolerance concept, first developed by Dr. Dan Siegel. All people have an optimal zone of emotional arousal where they can function effectively, manage stress, and process emotions rationally. Some people have a wider window than others as a result of both internal and external factors. Following a short presentation, you will have a chance to apply your learning by playing a cooperative game, Widening the Window, that Karen designed to make the Window of Tolerance concept come to life. This training is for all levels of experience and can support folks with a better understanding of what factors impact level of functioning and how to keep children, adults, and themselves inside the Window of Tolerance more often. In this eye-opening seminar, we’ll explore what Blocked Care looks like in daily life, why it develops, and how it affects both adult and child nervous systems. Through a brain-based, compassion-centered lens, we’ll normalize the experience, disrupt the guilt/shame spiral, and offer evidence-informed tools for reactivating the caregiving systems that support connection, empathy, and joy. Whether you’re a parent, relative caregiver, or professional supporting families, this session will leave you equipped and encouraged to take the next steps toward healing—starting with yourself.

    Feedback from class participants:

"It was a great class. Again it's helpful to see someone else's point of view and know that they have a certain set of rules and boundaries and they are sometimes conflicted. I have struggled with feeling like they don't understand the foster parents prospective, but didn't really take the time to try to understand theirs. I'm trying."

"It was so helpful to hear the real life of a caseworker. Hearing the details of all they manage gives me more compassion for the job they do and understanding for all they have to manage. Sarah was so well informed and her heart for the work came through so clearly."

Feedback from caregivers who took this class:

"I’m very thankful to have had the opportunity to take this class. The legalities of this entire process are mind boggling! We appreciate all the direction you’ve given us. This was a very informative class that answered several of our questions and addressed several of our concerns."

"Very informative and helpful information. Sometimes it feels like the logistics of the system are left up to foster parents to learn and navigate alone. This is very helpful. I always thought I’d need a lawyer to negotiate but this gives me more confidence."
