This training is designed to support foster and kinship caregivers when substance use is part of a child’s family story. Devin Sweat will help caregivers understand common substances and how use may show up in behavior, regulation, and parent–child interactions. Kathy Ramirez, Family Time Program Supervisor for Adams County, will explain how child welfare prioritizes safety while preserving parent–child connection through supervision, safety planning, and clear roles. Caregivers will leave with greater clarity, reduced anxiety, and practical guidance for supporting children before, during, and after family interactions.

Lying is a common but deeply misunderstood protective behavior, especially in children with trauma histories. What often appears as manipulation or defiance is more accurately a fear-based survival response rooted in a child’s nervous system. In this training, Robyn Gobbel reframes lying through a trauma-informed, neurobiological, and relational lens. Caregivers and professionals will gain a deeper understanding of what’s happening beneath the behavior—not just how to stop it. Participants will learn how to respond in ways that build safety, trust, and connection rather than fear-based compliance. This session moves beyond short-term behavior management into relationship-based healing. Attendees will leave with practical tools, greater clarity, and a compassionate framework for long-term change.

At just a young age, Liz did something most adults struggle to do — she reported her own abuse to protect her siblings. In this powerful one-hour session, Liz shares what it means to survive foster care, fight for your siblings, and grow up carrying the weight of your own rescue. This is not a training about policy. It’s a story about courage, sibling separation, identity, and reunion — told by someone who lived it.
