Educational Stability for Students in Foster and Kinship Care

In this session, Foster Care Education Subject Matter Experts will share information about educational rights for students in out of home care, the importance of and how foster parents and kinship caregivers can support school stability, and programs that may be available to students in foster care to achieve educational success. The session will include time for case discussion and consultation related to supporting educational outcomes for youth in foster care.

Maitri Jensen is a Foster Care Education Specialist with the Colorado Department of Human Services. As someone with five years of lived experience in the foster care system, Maitri brings a unique perspective and passion to the topic of educational stability. Maitri has professionally been working with youth for over ten years while specifically working with youth in foster care for just over six years. Through all the work that she has done, Maitri remains committed to improving educational systems for highly mobile youth, including youth in the foster care system.
Lindsey Tapp (Moderator)

Lindsey Tapp is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Foster Care Education Specialist for the Division of Child Welfare at the Colorado Department of Human Services. In this role Lindsey oversees the expansion of Fostering Opportunities, an evidence-based school district intervention for students experiencing foster care. Lindsey has worked for over a decade in the Colorado Child Welfare system in both direct practice and systems level capacities. She has served children, youth and families as a Child Welfare Case Worker, family therapist, and supervisor of a large county foster care agency. Lindsey is passionate about supporting education and human services systems collaboration as it pertains to children, youth and families involved in the child welfare system.
